Is occupational safety and health a good career?

You’ve probably wondered if safety is actually an interesting career. The truth is, most people do not plan to work in safety. Many enter the field almost by happenstance, through construction, healthcare, environmental disciplines or other industries.

I still remember telling my sister many years ago that I was getting into safety. At the time, she worked in finance and laughed, saying, “So your job is basically going to be handing out PPE all day?”

What I discovered was that safety is much more than hard hats and paperwork. It is about solving problems, understanding why and how people make decisions, and influencing behaviours. It is about creating safe and healthy workplaces, both physically and mentally, and most importantly, preventing incidents and protecting health and lives.

One day you might lead training, the next you could assess risks and help improve company culture. Every day is different, and every day gives you the opportunity to make a real impact on people’s lives.

Safety as a profession also opened doors I never expected. It gave me opportunities with some of the largest companies in the world and allowed me to work in many different countries. What started as a career choice eventually became a path to global opportunities, continuous learning, and meaningful work.

For the right person, safety becomes more than a job, it becomes a career with real purpose.
