Modern Approach to Risk Management Practices

WHAT WILL I LEARN? 

The course demonstrates how risk management improves work safety and increases the effectiveness of a company’s performance. The course provides an overview of various hazard identification and risk assessment tools. Participants will learn how to use 3 simple risk assessment techniques that they will be able to apply to their work immediately, and they will also become familiar with more complicated methods. Participants will learn how to take effective risk control measures based on risk prioritization, the hierarchy of controls, barrier methods and the timeline approach. The course content is based on international best practices and standards of the ISO 31000 Risk Management series.

​The course is intended for managers, specialists with responsibilities for health and safety and risk management and personnel who are to conduct or participate in hazard identification and risk assessment at various organizational levels, in a project or at a job. 

WHAT IS THE COURSE PROGRAM?

  • Risk-oriented approach as a key principle of modern corporate management.

  • How does risk management fit in an HSE management system?

  • What are hazards, adverse events and risks?

  • What is risk assessment in HSE?

  • Why do we need risk assessment?

  • Risk assessment requirements (international standards).

  • Qualitative and quantitative risk assessment methods – selection criteria.

  • 5 steps to risk assessment:

    1. Hazard identification – learning about different techniques;

    2. Who might be harmed;

    3. Evaluation of risk levels as analysis of likelihood and severity of an adverse event. Risk matrix as a tool for prioritizing risks and decision-making as to risk controls. The hierarchy of controls. ALARP. The principle of selecting risk control measures based on “barrier” methods: the “Swiss Cheese” model;

    4. Recording risk assessment findings and developing an action plan, filling out a risk register;

    5. Reviewing risk assessment.

  • Using simpler on-site risk assessment tools:

    1. Dynamic Risk Assessment; 

    2. Job Safety Analysis.

The course is interactive, and it is based on the interaction between an instructor and participants; it includes a variety of training formats: mini-lectures, discussions, practical exercises in small groups, analysis of business cases, individual self-assessment, watching video materials – to ensure understanding of the materials and reinforce the learning process. An instructor uses a lot of examples from international best practices in risk assessment.

Participants will be able to put the knowledge and skills acquired during the course to practice immediately.
